You are upgrading to the Eberspacher (Espar) Easy Start Select from a Mini Modulator or 801 controller and the screen shows just three dashes and the heater is blowing on full heat. In this article we explain how to connect an Easy Start Select controller correctly.
What does three dashes on an Easy Start Select mean? Three dashes on the display means that the controller is unable to identify the ambient air temperature. This missing temperature reference is due to a missing link on the heater harness and can cause the heater to work on full power, ignoring your temperature setpoint.

New heater installations or when upgrading from an old Eberspacher controller
Please note – before any changes are made to the heater connections and wiring harness, be sure to disconnect both the controller and heater from power.
The grey/red wire must be joined to the brown/white wire on the heater harness
Joining the grey/red wire and brown/white on the heater harness indicates that the heater ECU temperature sensor must be used to identify the ambient air temperature, see diagram below. The air drawn in to heat through the front fan will be monitored and the temperature will then be displayed on the screen.
Connections (wiring harness – Select controller):
-
Red (pos) – Red
-
Brown (neg) – Brown
-
Blue/White – Blue/White
Cables to join to each other on the wiring harness:
-
Grey/Red and Brown/White
This tells the heater to sense temperature at heater unit. The yellow wire is no longer required for switching, insulate all unused cables individually and tape back.
This should resolve your temperature sensing and display issue if you are recirculating the heated air in your vehicle back through the heater unit. If you are drawing in fresh air from outside your vehicle to heat up, please see the next section.
The Easy Start Select shows a temperature, but now it just blows on full heat; drawing fresh air in from outside
You have made the join on the heater harness, the temperature is displayed, and the unit is on full power and you are unable to turn it down… you have yourself a sauna on wheels. If that wasn’t what you were hoping for then you need to decide on whether to, option 1. Move your heater intake air from outside to inside the vehicle or, option 2. Connect an additional, remote temperature sensor to the heater harness.
Benefits of each scenario from my experience below:
-
Moving the heater air intake to recirculate the air internally makes the vehicle or boat warm up faster, there is less moisture and no risk of drawing fumes inside from outside the vehicle inside.
-
No extra large ducting holes are required for the intake ducting and grille, the air should be fresh and the temperature sensor is small and discreet.
How to connect an ambient air temperature sensor to an Airtronic with Easy Start Select
Connecting an external temperature sensor to the heater harness will allow you to continue drawing fresh air in from outside whilst accurately controlling the temperature inside. The brown/white cable from the temperature sensor connects to the grey/red and brown/white join on the harness. The grey cable from the temperature sensor connects to the grey cable on the heater harness. See the diagram below.
